La Ciotat is one of the most popular seaside destinations on the French Mediterranean coast. From wild calanques and hidden coves to wide sandy beaches, its coastline offers something for every taste. Here is our complete guide to the best beaches in La Ciotat to help you plan the perfect stay.
La Grande Plage — The Family Beach
La Grande Plage is La Ciotat’s main beach. Stretching for several hundred metres along the Boulevard de la République, it offers an ideal setting for families with children. Its shallow, gently sloping waters make it one of the safest swimming spots in town.
Key features:
- Fine sand and pebbles
- Calm, shallow waters
- Perfect for children
- Shops and restaurants nearby
- Parking available close by
Distance from our duplex: 10 minutes on foot heading south.
Arènes Cros Beach — The Local Favourite
Less known to tourists, Arènes Cros beach is where the locals of La Ciotat like to swim. Nestled in a small cove between two rocky headlands, it offers crystal-clear waters and a more authentic atmosphere than the main beach. The seabed is particularly rich in marine life — a paradise for snorkelling.
Key features:
- Pebbles and rocks
- Crystal-clear waters
- Great for snorkelling
- Less crowded in summer
- Accessible on foot from the town centre (15 min)
Fontsainte Beach — The Wildest Spot
Located to the east of La Ciotat, Fontsainte beach is one of the most beautiful natural coves in town. Bordered by pine trees and limestone rocks, it offers an unspoilt setting and exceptionally clear waters. Its slightly more challenging access keeps it quieter even at the height of summer.
Key features:
- Preserved natural setting
- Turquoise, very clear waters
- Ideal for free diving and snorkelling
- Access via a footpath
- Limited facilities (no restaurants directly on the beach)
Mugel Calanque — The Natural Jewel
Technically a calanque rather than a conventional beach, the Mugel is one of La Ciotat’s most spectacular natural sites. Reachable in 20 minutes on foot from the town centre or by road, this turquoise cove is surrounded by impressive limestone cliffs and lush Mediterranean vegetation.
Key features:
- Exceptionally clear turquoise waters
- Wild and unspoilt setting
- Perfect for swimming and snorkelling
- Adjacent botanical park (entrance fee applies)
- Very busy in July and August — arrive early!
Practical tip: In high season, parking is limited. Walk from the town centre along the coastal path to enjoy the scenery along the way.
Figuerolles Calanque — The Most Photogenic
A few minutes’ walk from the Mugel, the Figuerolles calanque is arguably the most photographed spot in La Ciotat. Its iconic mushroom-shaped rock, intensely blue waters and limestone cliffs make it a truly unique site on the French Mediterranean coast.
Key features:
- Unique and spectacular scenery
- Deep blue waters
- Ideal for diving and kayaking
- Accessible on foot (20 min from town centre) or by boat
- Hugely popular with photographers
Saint-Jean Beach — The Quietest Option
To the east of La Ciotat, the Saint-Jean neighbourhood is home to several small, discreet coves far from the bustle of the town centre. These pebble beaches offer an intimate setting and calm waters — perfect for a peaceful swim away from the summer crowds.
Key features:
- Calm and unspoilt atmosphere
- Ideal outside peak season
- Accessible by car or bus from the town centre
- A few restaurants and shops nearby
Practical Tips for La Ciotat’s Beaches
Best time to visit: June to September for swimming. June and September are ideal — the water is warm and the beaches are far less crowded than in July and August.
Getting there: Most beaches are within walking distance of La Ciotat town centre. In summer, water shuttles also connect the old port to the main coves.
What to bring: Sunscreen, water shoes for pebble beaches, a mask and snorkel, and plenty of water — drinking fountains are rare on the natural beaches.
Parking: In July and August, parking near the beaches is very difficult. Walking, cycling or taking the bus from the town centre is strongly recommended. The Verdun car park offers weekly passes.
